Spring is finally showing its true colours in Durban which means goodbye oatmeal and hello smoothies and smoothie bowls. I have never been a fan of breakfast but this year I decided to make more time for it and I have definitely noticed how vital it is. One of my go-to breakfast options is smoothies and my favourite is my healthy chocolate smoothie. This recipe is vegetarian and vegan-friendly.
I still remember my mother and brother shouting at me for always running out the house without having any breakfast. I used to pick my favourite cereal but I only used to eat it on weekends. I was always late for my lift club so naturally, I was seen running out the house, bag in one hand and jewelry in the other.
I was finally out of University and started the New Year attending the Practical Legal Training course with the Law Society. It started later than my University lectures used to so I had no choice but to start having breakfast. At first I used to make a quick breakfast with milk and cereal, however, it was full of sugar and gave me a headache as opposed to keeping me full.
I decided to do some research on healthy filling breakfast ideas and I was amazed at all the deliciously sounding recipes that I came across.
Over the past six months I have been testing out various recipes and I now have my collection of breakfast recipes that I can make when I am in a hurry or when I have enough time, and most importantly will keep me satisfied till lunchtime.
One of my favourite treats is chocolate. When I came across chocolate recipes I was surprised to find out that chocolate can also be “healthy.” The key ingredient is raw cacao. Raw cacao is unrefined cocoa powder. It has no sugar or preservatives. The main ingredient in my smoothie is raw cacao powder which is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process of cold-pressing the beans keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat.
The ingredients for my healthy chocolate smoothie recipe are:
- 1 banana
- 1/3 yoghurt
- 2 to 3 teaspoons of raw cacao powder
- ½ cup of water
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened nut butter
If you are vegan then you can use plant-based yogurt instead of dairy yogurt. Alternatively, you can use 1/3 of an avocado. I personally love adding plant-based milk such as the Clover Good Hope unsweetened soy or Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk instead of the water to make it creamier.
It is important that you use cacao powder and not cocoa powder and this is the key ingredient that makes it a healthy chocolate smoothie as opposed to a regular chocolate smoothie.
Lastly. I gave the option of sweetening the smoothie with pure maple syrup as this is the healthiest form of sweetener. An alternative is a teaspoon of pure honey, stevia or xylitol. I personally love the taste of dark chocolate so I don’t always add the sweetener. Sometimes your banana is sweet enough as well.
I dice my bananas and place it in my blender.
I then add all the remaining ingredients and blitz it until it turns into a smooth chocolatey
If you want to make this into a smoothie bowl then simply use frozen bananas to create a thicker consistency. If you don't have frozen bananas on hand then just add some ice cubes to the mixture.
